Every time the seasons change, many girls, like me, probably feel like they have nothing to wear. Opening the closet, although there are quite a few clothes, it always feels like something's missing. Old pants and skirts get boring after wearing and washing them too many times. Even clothes with a strong design and good material, because I don't know how to style them, they always feel awkward to wear out, and end up at the bottom of the closet.
Today I'm not gonna talk about complicated fashion rules. I just wanna share some simple and practical outfit tips. We can use the clothes we already own, and still look nicer and more put-together.
Attention to three things: color, shape, and fabric. Mastering at least one of these will make a big difference.
Play with Color
You don't need to be good at colors. Just try these easy ideas.
① The 70/30 Rule
Use 70% neutral base colors (such as black, white, gray, khaki, and denim) as the main color, then add 30% bright colors or accent colors to brighten the overall look. This creates a clean and sophisticated appearance.
② Match similar colors
Within the same color family, choose items with different shades and tones for layering. For example, a dark blue sweater paired with a light blue shirt, or a light camel top with dark brown pants, creates a sense of depth.
③ Mix different colors
Choose contrasting colors like red, yellow, and blue, or natural color combinations like blue + green, or yellow + purple. By controlling the brightness and area, avoid color clashes. For example, use a large area of neutral color as a base, then pair it with small areas of bright accessories, such as colorful socks, a yellow scarf, or a red bag, instantly adding a highlight to the outfit.
Here are some easy color combinations that always work:
Pink + blue / buttery yellow / beige / lavender
Blue + yellow / orange / pink / gray
Yellow + purple / blue / green / brown
Red + white / black / beige / gray
Green + brown / pink / yellow / white
When you put outfits together, make sure colors balance each other. You can also get ideas from your clothes. For example, a white T-shirt with a blue print could be paired with blue pants, a blue belt, blue shoes, and even blue earrings, a blue hat, and a blue bag. Through different blue, the overall look will be very harmonious and detailed.
Choose the right shape
Often, the cut is more important than the style. Pick shapes that work for your body, and you'll look way better. Two universal principles: fitted on top and loose on the bottom, or loose on top and fitted on the bottom.
- Pear shape: For those with wide hips and thick thighs, try tight tops with wide‑leg pants or A‑line skirts.
- Apple shape: For those with a bit of fat around the waist and abdomen, opt for a loose top and fitted bottom to accentuate the waistline and draw attention to slimmer areas.
Curvier girls look good in clothes that show their shape in a feminine way. Square necklines and V‑necks are good because they show a little skin.
Slim girls are well-suited to various shirts and thin knitwear, as well as tops with subtle designs or pleats. This not only makes them look light and airy but also prevents them from appearing too thin.
For a more stylish look, try special shapes, such as scimitar pants, harem pants, A-line skirts, and cocoon coats. These can make ordinary outfits more memorable and interesting.
Add or Subtracting Elements
Clothing can be simple or complex. Learn to add or take away elements.
① Adding Elements to Simple Clothes
If your whole outfit is plain colors, add small patterns. Like stripes, plaid, dots, animal print, or flowers. You don't need much. Just put them on accessories, like bags, scarves, hats, hair clips, or scarves will be enough to make them stand out.
② Simplifying Complex Clothes
For beginners, if your top has a lot of prints or intricate designs, keep your bottoms and outerwear in solid colors and basic styles. You can also layer a solid-color vest or blazer to tone down the complexity.
If you already know a little about fashion, you can do more. Take colors or small details from your busy top and match them somewhere else. Like if your top has lace, use a lace hair clip to match.
Layer your clothes
Layering is how you make simple clothes look stylish. If you're unsure how to add a touch of design to your basic wardrobe, pay attention to how similar clothes are styled when shopping in stores or online and learn fom them.
For clothes that are too heavy or too dark in color, use light or soft clothes to brighten them up
Match colors between layers. Show a little of your inner shirt at the sleeves, bottom, or neck. It makes your outfit look layered and light.
If a big block of color makes you look bigger, you can put your hair in front of you to divide the color block and reduce the bulky feeling.
You can also mix different materials. Like knit with leather, a T‑shirt with a tulle skirt. Different textures together create visual contrast.
Use accessories
The soul of an outfit always lies in its accessories.
Necklaces can be layered, with varying lengths; mixing pearl chains, delicate chains, and medium-length chains creates a French-inspired look.
Big earrings, sunglasses, and hats can elevate your outfit.
Multi-functionality: Maximize the use of existing items. A shawl can be worn as a fringe, and a fringe as a shawl. A scarf can be worn around the neck, tied to hair, used as a headscarf, or even tied around a bag, adding uniqueness to your style.
Show small details. Let a little sleeve show, or wear colorful socks or an ankle bracelet. Small things make your outfit look more thought-out.
Wear one piece in different ways
Changing how you wear it: For example, leave a striped shirt open as a light jacket, or tie the hem up as a cropped top; pair a dress with different jackets, shoes, and bags. The same dress can be worn casually with a denim jacket, professionally with a suit, or elegantly with a knit sweater, adapting to different occasions.
Seasonal layering: Mix and match clothes for all four seasons. Wear the same dress from summer to winter, and extend the lifespan of a single item by layering it with accessories from different seasons (such as a short-sleeved summer top with a long-sleeved winter top).
Truly stylish girls don't have the most clothes. They just know how to use what they already have really well.
You don't need expensive clothes to look good. Small changes and creative ideas can make your daily outfits look personal and stylish.
