While working away from home, I bet almost of us has lived in a rental house at some point. We have that exact same feeling. A rented place always feels like a temporary stopover. You just muddle through day by day, and it slowly takes away that sense of belonging we all long for.
But here's the thing, the apartment might be rented, yet our life isn't. I've been renting for five whole years now. My room isn't big at all, but it's warm and cozy enough for me. Little by little, I've decorated this small space and turned it into my ideal little nest. Today I wanna share all my real experience with you. You don't need big renovations, and you don't have to spend much money. Just change a little bit of your thinking, and you can turn a cold, empty rental room into a warm home filled with your vibe.
Make good use of space planning
With proper layout planning, even a tiny room can feel open and roomy. First off, you can divide reasonable living areas based on your room's size and shape. For example, move your bed a bit closer to the window. When the weather is nice, sunlight can pour in, you can lie on the bed and enjoy the view outside, and it also makes the whole bedroom look way more spacious.
You can put a multi-functional nightstand next to the bed too. It's super handy for storing daily small stuff within reach, and most of these nightstands even come with built-in charging ports, which is really convenient. Besides that, you can add multi-purpose furniture in the living room, like foldable coffee tables and sofas. It works as a normal tea table when you work from home. When you wanna eat, just pull out the extra small board, it turns bigger to hold your food and laptop at the same time. The empty space and drawers under the board can store messy bits and pieces. It's practical, and saves so much space, honestly.
Storage is another key point. Rental spaces always get messy because of too many random items. You can buy some no-drill wall shelves online, perfect for putting your daily cups, books and small ornaments. Put storage boxes with wheels under the bed to pack off-season clothes and quilts, it hides all the clutter well. A multi-layer shoe rack by the door is also a must, no more piling shoes messily on the floor. Even large furniture like wardrobes and fridges, you can use the gaps around them to add embedded storage cabinets with simple doors. It won't take up your moving space, and you can grab things easily whenever you need. All these storage items are cheap, but they'll make your room neat and wide. The extra space you save can be filled with little things that boost your daily happiness.
Pick movable soft decor instead of hard renovation
I've moved three times in five years of renting. One common problem I always meet is, most landlords never allow you to nail holes on the wall, repaint the room, let alone change the original house layout or damage the walls in any way.
Since we can't change the hard structure, soft furnishing is the best choice for small upgrades. All these things are easy to pack up and take apart. You won't upset your landlord, and moving won't become a huge hassle either. For instance, use picture hanging strips— they're totally wall-safe and nail-free — to hang art prints, photo collages and decorative wall art. You can pick your favorite posters, travel photos, hand-drawn art or fabric tapestries. Magnetic paper holder are great for photo walls, you can switch pictures anytime you want, they're cheap too, so you don't need to blow your budget on decoration.
If you wanna unify the whole style of your rental, wall stickers are a great alternative to repainting walls. Go for soft warm colors or fresh light tones, it'll make the whole room brighter and visually bigger.
Lay a soft carpet on the cold floor can totally change the whole vibe. I suggest short-haired, washable styles. Place it beside your bed, your feet won't touch the cold floor as soon as you get up in the morning. Lay it in front of the sofa, you can sit cross-legged to watch dramas and relax. It creates a private relaxing corner just for you, easy to roll up and take away when moving. Throw a bean bag, some cushions and warm blankets in the corner. Match your cushions and blankets with the same color system as your curtains and carpet, it looks so harmonious. You can wrap yourself in the blanket when it's cold, it really makes daily life feel so much nicer.
Fill Your Room with daily vibes
Besides soft decor, keeping a few green plants is a simple way to add vitality to your room. Choose low-maintenance small plants that don't take up much space, like pothos and succulents. Put them in nice flower pots on your windowsill or desk, looking at those green leaves always cheers me up a lot.
Filling your room with personal items is also important to build a unique sense of belonging. Display your little souvenirs from trips, such as small stones, postcards and handmade gifts. Put them on bookshelves and storage cabinets. Every single item has its own story, every time you see them, you'll recall those sweet little moments in your life.
You can also use light and fragrance to create a cozy atmosphere. Get a floor lamp or some string lights. Warm yellow light is way softer than harsh white lighting. It's really comfortable to scroll on your phone or read books at night with warm lights on. Wrap string lights around your bed head or curtains, the ambient vibe comes out instantly. Put a scented candle near the door, pick your favorite scent, citrus and woody fragrance are my top picks. Smelling the familiar nice scent the moment you walk in, you'll truly feel like you're home.
Adjust Your Mindset
It's okay to accept that your living place is temporary, but we should still chase that warm sense of belonging. Changing your mindset matters more than you think.
We shouldn't treat our life casually, even if we know we might move out one day. Cook carefully, clean your room on time, decorate your space little by little. Don't think you're living in someone else's house, actually, you're living your own present life. That's the biggest mindset shift I've learned over the years.
Tiny changes can bring huge satisfaction. Cover your old shabby desk with a soft tablecloth, add a soft cushion to your hard chair. These small details make you realize, this space is arranged and taken care of by me. It gives you a strong sense of satisfaction, letting you know this warm little nest is all yours.
Honestly, making a rental feel like home never needs expensive furniture or a huge spacious room. What matters most is filling the space with your preferences, your habits and your daily memories. Even a small simple rental room, it can be your sweet little home, and the safest shelter to rest and recharge after a long tiring day.
